The Austin 7 put Britain on wheels. The first Austin 7s used a 696cc four-cylinder engine producing 10 bhp, later increased to 747cc and 13 bhp. Top speed was 50 mph and fuel consumption a remarkable 50 mpg. The Box Saloon arrived in 1928, RP in 1931, Ruby in 1934 (with its rounded body), and Big Seven (with 900cc engine) in 1937. The Ruby is the most familiar Austin 7 silhouette to most enthusiasts — over 65,000 built. 2026 values: Box Saloon £7,000, Ruby £10,000–£16,000, Big Seven £12,000–£18,000. Austin's factory sports variants are the collector grade. The Ulster (1929–1933) commemorated the 1929 Tourist Trophy class win and used a Cozette supercharger to produce 33 bhp. Only 75 originals built. The Nippy (1934–1937) was the affordable sports two-seater. The Speedy was the road-going version of the works team cars. 2026 values: Nippy £40,000–£65,000, genuine Ulster £180,000+, Speedy £120,000+. Provenance documents through the A7CA register are essential.

Tens of thousands of Austin 7 chassis were rebodied as 'specials' from the 1930s onward — single-seater racers, Cambridge sports tourers, even three-wheelers. Many are still actively raced at the Vintage Sports Car Club's events at Silverstone, Cadwell Park and Mallory Park. A well-built special with documented racing history trades for £25,000–£60,000 depending on era. The 750 Motor Club championships have run continuously since 1939 — the longest unbroken single-make racing in the world.

Parts supply is excellent — engine internals, body panels, brake parts and chassis components are all remade by UK specialists including Tony Betts, A7 Components and Vintage and Classic Spares.
