The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia married Beetle mechanicals with Italian Carrozzeria Ghia styling and German Karmann coachwork. The convertible used the same floorpan and mechanicals but added X-bracing to compensate for the open roof. 80,899 built — much rarer than the coupe. Convertible-only details include a manually folding fabric roof with internal headlining, reinforced sills, and chrome rear-quarter trim. Built on the larger Type 3 chassis with the 1,500cc and later 1,600cc flat-four, the Type 34 was sold as a luxury Karmann Ghia in Europe and never officially exported to the USA. Only 42,505 built and survival rate is low — perhaps 1,500 remain worldwide. Its sharp Sergio Sartorelli design predates the Wedge era by a decade. UK 2026 values: £30,000–£65,000. The Type 34 is the rarest factory Karmann Ghia and parts supply is challenging — body panels are remade by Klassikfab in Germany.

Mechanical parts (engine, gearbox, brakes) are shared with the Beetle and Type 3, making them cheap and abundant via UK suppliers like Just Kampers and Volksbolts. Karmann Ghia-specific body panels (front and rear clips, doors) are remade in Brazil and Mexico — quality varies. The rear wings ('hips') trap mud and are the most common rust point. Always inspect the heater channels and battery tray. A full bare-metal restoration runs £25,000–£40,000 — often more than the finished car is worth.

Type 14 coupes and convertibles are abundant in California, Texas, Brazil and Mexico. As 30+ year-old historic vehicles they qualify for 5% VAT only with zero import duty.
