Shelby Cobra / AC Cobra — History, Variants and Buyer's Guide (2026)

When Carroll Shelby dropped a Ford 260ci V8 into an AC Ace chassis in 1962, he created the most influential British-American hybrid sports car of all time. Only 998 original Cobras were built between 1962 and 1968, of which 348 were the legendary 427 big-block. Six decades on, original Cobras top £1 million at Bonhams, continuation cars trade for £80,000–£200,000, and the 'Cobra-style' replica market remains the largest kit-car category in the world. Carroll Shelby's first Cobras used the 260ci small-block (75 cars), then the 289ci small-block (580 cars). Built at AC Cars in Thames Ditton, shipped to Shelby American in Los Angeles for engines and transmissions. Chassis CSX2000 was the prototype now in a private US collection. The 289 weighed just 1,070 kg and hit 0–60 mph in 5.5 seconds — faster than a Ferrari 250 GT of the period. Values in 2026: £600,000–£900,000 for a documented 289. Ford pushed Shelby to fit the 7.0-litre 427 FE V8 to compete with the Corvette 427. The chassis was widened, suspension uprated to coil-springs, and the body bulged to clear the wider wheels. 348 original 427 Cobras were built — 23 of them as the lightweight competition 'S/C' variant. 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds, 165 mph top speed. CSX3015 sold at Mecum 2022 for $5.5 million. The 427 is the holy grail of post-war sports cars.

When AC Cars resumed Cobra production in 1982 under Brian Angliss, the MkIV used original AC tooling, a Ford 302 or 5.0-litre V8, and was sold as a complete UK-registered car. Approximately 480 MkIVs were built. These are not replicas — they carry AC chassis numbers and are recognised by the Shelby American Automobile Club. UK 2026 values: £80,000–£140,000. The MkIV is the most authentic Cobra a buyer under £200,000 can own.

Three legitimate continuation makers exist in 2026: Shelby American (CSX-series with original Shelby chassis numbers), Kirkham Motorsports (aluminium-bodied, made in Poland), and Backdraft Racing (Florida-built). Continuation cars range £80,000–£300,000. The wider replica market — Pilgrim, Dax, Gardner Douglas in the UK; Factory Five in the USA — offers Cobra-style cars from £25,000 self-built to £80,000 turn-key. Original 1960s Cobras qualify for 5% VAT only as 30+ year old historic vehicles, with zero import duty. Continuation cars built post-1996 attract 10% duty plus 20% VAT.
