EORI Number for UK Car Export — Setup & Use (2026)

    2026-06-279 min readBy Zahir

How the EORI number works for UK car exporters in 2026 — application, GB vs XI distinction and use in the CDS export declaration.

    Introduction

An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is mandatory for every UK exporter, including private individuals shipping a single car overseas. Application is free, takes 10 minutes online, but issuance can take 5–7 working days. This 2026 guide explains who needs one, GB vs XI EORI distinction, and how it appears on the CDS export entry.

    Who needs an EORI number

Every UK person or business sending goods (including a single vehicle) out of the UK to a non-UK destination needs an EORI. This includes one-off private exporters, expats shipping personal vehicles, classic car collectors and commercial dealers. Exception: shipments to EU using the simplified Postponed VAT Accounting do not always require EORI, but car shipments always do. See GOV.UK EORI guidance.

    GB EORI vs XI EORI

Two formats. GB EORI (format: GB123456789000) is for shipments from Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales). XI EORI (format: XI123456789000) is for shipments from or to Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework. Most UK car exporters need only GB EORI. Northern Ireland residents shipping via Belfast or Larne may need both. EU-based importers receiving UK cars need an EU EORI from their member state.

    How to apply

Five-minute online application via the GOV.UK EORI portal. Required: National Insurance number or UTR (Unique Tax Reference), home address, contact email and phone. Sole traders and individuals apply under personal identity; limited companies apply with company UTR. HMRC issues the EORI by email within 5–7 working days — apply at least 14 days before vessel cut-off to avoid delays.

How EORI appears on the CDS export entry

The freight forwarder enters your EORI in the 'Exporter' field of the CDS export declaration alongside the vehicle's chassis number, V5C details, value and destination. HMRC validates the EORI in real time — invalid or expired EORI rejects the entry instantly. Without a valid EORI on the CDS entry, the vehicle cannot legally leave the UK port. See our CDS guide.

    Lost EORI and validation

EORI numbers never expire but can be deactivated by HMRC for inactivity over 3 years. Check status at the GOV.UK EORI checker before booking. If deactivated, reapply — issuance takes the standard 5–7 days. Keep your EORI in a single document with V5C, passport and consignee details — it's the second most-asked-for piece of information after the chassis number.

    Conclusion

EORI is the cheapest and easiest mandatory item in UK car export — free, 10-minute online application, 5–7 day issuance. The single most-common reason for first-time exports being delayed is forgetting to apply for EORI 14 days before sailing. Apply on the day you accept a shipping quote, store the number with your passport and V5C, and the rest of the customs paperwork falls into place naturally.
