How Shared Containers Reduce Car Shipping Costs

    2026-07-028 min readBy Zahir

Sharing a 40ft container splits the fixed cost of the box across two to four vehicles. Here is the economics behind it and the trade-offs that come with the saving.

    The economics in one paragraph

Four cars loaded on racking inside a 40ft shared container

Almost every cost in container shipping is fixed per box rather than per car: ocean freight, terminal handling, customs entry, the Bill of Lading and the container itself. Ship one car in a 40ft and you pay all of it. Ship four cars in the same 40ft on racking and each owner pays roughly a quarter of the fixed element plus their own handling and securing. That is the whole idea — the box does not care how many vehicles are inside it.

    R-Rak and racked loading

Standard two-car loading places vehicles nose to tail on the container floor. Racking systems such as R-Rak lift two cars above two others on a steel frame, taking a 40ft box to four vehicles without any car bearing weight.

Racking adds £85–£150 per vehicle in equipment and labour but roughly halves the freight share, so on any deep-sea route it pays for itself twice over. It also improves protection: racked cars are strapped at the wheels, not the chassis, and cannot shift against each other in a seaway.

What you actually save in 2026

Indicative per-vehicle totals from the UK, standard saloon, insurance excluded:

    | Route | Sole-use 20ft | Shared 40ft (per car) | Saving | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | UK to UAE | £2,150–£2,650 | £1,250–£1,650 | ~£800 | | UK to Nigeria | £2,250–£2,750 | £1,300–£1,700 | ~£850 | | UK to Australia | £2,395–£2,895 | £1,450–£1,850 | ~£900 | | UK to USA East Coast | £2,150–£2,650 | £1,250–£1,650 | ~£800 |

Full line-by-line workings are in the sole-use vs shared cost breakdown.

    The trade-offs you are accepting

Schedule: the container sails when it is full. Consolidators normally guarantee a maximum wait of seven to fourteen days, but a fixed arrival date is not something a shared load can promise.

Deconsolidation: at destination the box is unpacked at a warehouse before you collect, adding two to five days and £110–£190.

Personal effects: usually prohibited, because one owner's undeclared belongings hold up everyone else's clearance.

Grouped customs: your car clears alongside others. A problem with someone else's paperwork can delay the whole container — which is why reputable consolidators pre-check every file before loading.

When sharing is the wrong call

Choose sole-use, or RoRo, if the vehicle is a high-value classic, if you are shipping household goods with the car, if you are moving two or more vehicles yourself, or if you have a hard arrival deadline such as a relocation start date or a shipping-in date for a motorsport event.

For everything else — the daily-driver saloon, the 4x4 heading to West Africa, the used SUV bound for the Gulf — a shared container is the lowest-cost enclosed option available. See how our shared container service works or get a quote to compare it against RoRo for your route.

UK collection, recovery and onward transport

Before any international shipment, vehicles need to reach the loading port — and many customers ask us to handle the UK leg too. Our recovery and transport network covers every postcode, 24 hours a day.

Start with the main hubs: Car Recovery UK, Vehicle Recovery UK, 24/7 Breakdown Recovery and Nationwide Vehicle Transportation.

City coverage includes London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Glasgow, Sheffield and Bristol.

Pre-book a port run on a flatbed transporter from Southampton, Portsmouth, Liverpool or Felixstowe via Ipswich, or call 24/7 for breakdown recovery in London, Birmingham or Manchester.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many cars fit in a shared container?
Two side by side or nose to tail in a 40ft on the floor, or up to four using R-Rak racking. A 20ft takes a single vehicle.
How much does shared container shipping save?
Roughly £800 to £900 per vehicle against a sole-use container on typical 2026 deep-sea routes from the UK.
How long do I wait for a shared container to fill?
Usually three to ten days at the consolidation warehouse. Reputable consolidators cap the wait at around fourteen days and will upgrade or rebook if the box does not fill.
Is shared container cheaper than RoRo?
No. RoRo remains the cheapest method for a running vehicle. Shared container is the cheapest enclosed method, and it is the right choice for non-running, low or high-value cars.
