RoRo is the cheapest option for any vehicle that drives, steers and brakes. A shared container becomes competitive when you also want to ship spare parts or personal effects, and it is the right answer for anything low, modified or non-running. Freight is only part of the landed cost. Budget for:

- Customs duty: 5% of CIF value, in line with the GCC common tariff.
• Port handling and clearance at Hamad Port: QAR 900–1,800 (roughly £190–£390).
• Traffic Department inspection and registration (Istimara): QAR 500–1,200.
• Third-party insurance: mandatory before plates are issued, from QAR 600 per year.

Qatar does not levy VAT on vehicle imports at the time of writing, which is a meaningful saving compared with the UAE's 5% and Saudi Arabia's 15%.

Qatar restricts imports of used vehicles to those under a defined age — in practice, five years for personal imports, with commercial importers needing a trade licence and agency approval. Left-hand drive is the norm but right-hand drive vehicles are accepted for private import, with the caveat that resale is far weaker.

A GCC conformity certificate (GSO) is required for many models. Where the vehicle was built to EU specification, obtain the manufacturer's Gulf specification letter before shipping — retro-fitting cooling, filtration or lighting after arrival is the single largest unbudgeted cost we see.

5. Declare honestly. Qatari customs use their own valuation tables; a low invoice does not reduce duty and does trigger inspection.
