Best UK Ports for Vehicle Export: Southampton vs Felixstowe and the Rest

Southampton handles the largest share of UK finished-vehicle traffic and is the default loading port for RoRo services to the Middle East, West Africa, Southern Africa, Australasia and the US East Coast. Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Höegh, Grimaldi and NYK all call regularly, and on the busiest trades there is a sailing most weeks.

Strengths: the deepest RoRo terminal capacity in the country, dedicated vehicle storage compounds, and enough competing carriers that pricing stays keen. Weaknesses: inland haulage from the North and Scotland adds £180–£450, and peak-season compound congestion in July and August can push cut-off dates earlier than the published schedule.

Felixstowe is the UK's largest container port and the natural choice when the vehicle is going in a box — sole-use 20ft, 40ft, or a shared load. Almost every deep-sea container line calls, so routings to Asia, the Gulf, East Africa and the Americas are frequent and competitively priced.

For cars specifically, Felixstowe works best when you are loading at an inland consolidation warehouse in the Midlands or the South East and trucking the sealed box to the quay. It is not a RoRo port for finished vehicles, so if you want to drive the car onto the vessel, Southampton, Tilbury or Immingham are the practical options.

Tilbury: strong for West Africa RoRo — Lagos, Tema, Abidjan and Dakar — with regular Grimaldi tonnage and a short haul from London and the South East.

London Gateway: deep-sea containers with excellent motorway access; competitive on Gulf and Indian subcontinent boxes.

Liverpool: the shortest routing for Canada and the US East Coast, plus Ireland. If your car is in the North West, Liverpool often beats Southampton on total landed cost even when the sea freight looks higher.

Bristol (Royal Portbury): one of Europe's largest vehicle handling terminals; useful for South Africa, the Gulf and occasional US services, and convenient for South Wales and the South West.

Immingham and Grimsby: the North Sea vehicle hub. Best for Northern Europe, the Baltic and feeder connections to Bremerhaven and Zeebrugge for onward deep-sea loading.

1. RoRo or container? RoRo means Southampton, Tilbury, Bristol or Immingham. Container means Felixstowe, London Gateway or Liverpool. Choose the method first and the port follows.

2. Where is the vehicle now? Inland haulage runs roughly £1.10–£1.80 per mile for a single car on a covered transporter. A cheaper sea freight 300 miles away is frequently the more expensive shipment overall.

3. When must it arrive? Sailing frequency beats headline rate on a deadline. A Southampton sailing next Tuesday at £1,295 usually beats a Liverpool sailing in three weeks at £1,150 once storage and risk are priced in.
