IDP vs Local Driving Licence — Which Do You Need in 2026?

A common misconception is that an International Driving Permit lets a UK driver use any foreign road indefinitely. It does not. An IDP is a translation document tied to your UK licence and is valid for short visits only — typically 3, 6 or 12 months depending on the country. Your UK photocard licence is the legal authority to drive; the IDP is a multilingual translation. The IDP is therefore only valid for as long as you remain a visitor in the eyes of the destination country's licensing authority. Most countries define the visitor cut-off as either 90 days, 6 months, or "until you take up residence". Most US states accept a UK licence (plus 1949 IDP in stricter states like Florida) for 90 days. After that you must take a state driving test. California and Texas allow walk-in written and practical tests without prior local instruction; New York requires a 5-hour pre-licensing course. Visitors can drive on a UK licence for 3 months in NSW, Victoria and Queensland; 6 months in WA and SA. Permanent residents must convert immediately. Post-Brexit, UK photocard licences are recognised in all 27 EU countries for visits, and most accept them for resident use too. Exceptions: Italy requires conversion within 12 months of residency, and Spain within 6 months. Germany, France and the Netherlands allow indefinite use of a UK licence for residents.
